XP computer not able to use http://<computername> in browser to access intranet located on Windows 7 computer
I have set up my Windows 7 computer as a server for web pages. I want to access it from a Windows XP computer located in the workgroup using http://<computername> where <computername> refers to the Windows 7 computer. This works on the Windows 7 computer. I have been able to access the pages from the Windows XP computer using http://<ipaddress>, so I am guessing that I have the firewall on the Windows 7 computer set up correctly to access the pages. The Windows XP computer is able to see the Windows 7 computer in its Network Places. What do I need to do to get the Windows XP computer to be able to resolve the http://<computername>?

This problem is name netbios resolution one. Either enable netbios over TCP/IP or change the hosts file*). (Flash cache when you do any change in setting. The first resolution can take longer time.) Regards Milos *) Or use WINS, if you have larger network with server infrastructure

Heres the steps to enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP: Go to Control Panel - Network Connections. Right-Click on the connection and click Properties. Find Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Version 4 in the list. Click Properties, and then click Advanced. On the Advanced TCP/IP settings windows, go to WINS tab. Under NetBIOS setting, click Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP, and then click OK. I decided to try it with lmhosts, since it's a very small home network set up as a workgroup. The XP computer is set for NetBIOS over TCP/IP. My entry in lmhosts looks like <ipaddress> <computername> #PRE I did a "nbtstat -R" and then tried "nbtstat -c". The Windows 7 computer shows in the results of the latter command. Still, though, it won't work as http://<computername> in the browser address bar (Internet Explorer). Is there something else that needs to be done?
